A Little Goodbye, A Big Step

The first day of preschool is a big day—for children and their parents.

Today was the first day at Explorers Preschool, and as we welcomed our children, we were reminded that every child experiences that first goodbye a little differently.

Some children walked right in as if they had been coming to school forever. They barely looked back at Mom or Dad before finding something to play with and getting busy exploring the classroom.

Some needed a little extra reassurance before they were ready to let go.

And yes, there were a couple of tears.

And you know what? That's okay.

Starting preschool is a big step. For some children, the excitement of a new classroom, new friends, and new things to explore takes over right away. For others, the reality of saying goodbye to Mom or Dad can feel a little overwhelming.

Neither response is wrong.

A child who walks in without looking back isn't necessarily more ready than the child who needs a few extra hugs. And a child who cries at drop-off isn't necessarily unhappy at school or not ready for preschool.

Sometimes those tears simply mean, “I love you, and saying goodbye is hard.”

One of the most important things we can do as teachers is give children the time, comfort, and confidence they need to make that transition. We help them find something to do, introduce them to friends, engage them in an activity, and remind them that they are cared for.

And usually, once the door closes and the day gets going, those tears are replaced by curiosity, play, and smiles.

A Few Tips for Drop-Off

If your child is having a hard time saying goodbye, remember that you don't have to make the goodbye perfect—you just need to make it predictable.

A quick hug, a reassuring “I love you, you're going to have a great day,” and a confident goodbye can help your child understand that you trust their teachers and that you will be back.

It can be tempting to linger when your child is upset, but sometimes a longer goodbye can actually make the separation harder. Give them a loving goodbye, let their teachers step in, and trust that they will be supported.

Most importantly, give your child time.

Some children adjust in a day. Others need several days—or even a few weeks—to feel completely comfortable. Every child is different.

Those Little Goodbyes Matter

For some children, they confidently walked through the classroom door.

For others, it meant taking a deep breath and

letting go of Mom or Dad.

Both are accomplishments.

Those little goodbyes may seem like a small moment in the morning, but they're actually the beginning of something much bigger: learning to separate, make friends, try new things, solve problems, and discover that “I can do this.”
